RISE AND FALL OF EUROPEAN SUPER LEAGUE!

Hello Friends! Hope you all are hale and hearty and taking good care of yourselves! I am back with a new blog on ‘The Rise and Fall of European Super League’. Twelve of the biggest European football clubs have announced their intention to form their own competition, known as the European Super League. This has become a major news story, and has been criticized by fans, players, football club owners, and politicians across Europe. So, in this Blog, I will explain what a Super League is, why clubs want to join it, why it is such a controversial topic and also how fans have contributed in it’s doom! So let’s get started!

introduction

Football, is the world’s most popular sport. It is played, watched, and enjoyed by millions of men and women around the world. For many including me, it is more than just a sport or game; it is an important part of our life and identity. I have friends who consider being a Liverpool fan, Manchester United fan, a Real Madrid fan or a Barcelona Fan for example, a more important part of their identity than their political belief or even religion. The team you support can help you make friends or cause arguments. For much of the world, and especially Europe and South America, football is a way of life. We all pride ourselves in being our clubs’ fans and we always support our clubs through their thick and thin, this is what Football is all about!

So, when twelve of the biggest football clubs in the world announced to the world that they were going to establish their own tournament, it was always going to be a major news story.  The teams’ plan to launch a closed competition known as the Super League, in which they would compete only against themselves and has been almost unanimously criticised by footballers, fans, newspapers, smaller clubs, and even the UK government. The last few days have been very Tumultuous because The European Super League proposal has rocked the World of Football to it’s very core. So to make it all clear, I will be briefing you everything about this controversial league, how it unfolded and how fans ruled the show and saved the day for World Football! So let’s start with the basic question:

What is the European Super League?

The European Super League is a New Breakaway League which was Proposed by the 12 best clubs of Europe or rather to be more precise I would say The Billionaire Owners of these 12 Teams. The Founding Clubs of this newly proposed League are the Big Six of England, that is, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspurs, 3 Teams from Italy, that is, Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan and 3 from Spain – Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and FC Barcelona. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund from Germany and Paris Saint-Germain of France were the other 3 clubs Invited but they rejected this Proposal!

The Concept of a European Super League is not new. The talks started in the Year 1998 but the talks ultimately never progressed the planning stage as it failed to garner much attention then. In the year 2008,  Florentino Pérez, the president of Real Madrid, commenced plans for a super league competition, as he thought the UEFA Champions League was obsolete and problematic for the sport, and was an obstacle from letting clubs grow their businesses and develop infrastructure. The Proposal started gathering steam in 2018 and was officially announced by the 12 Founding Clubs in 2021.

The 12 Founding Clubs of ESL
Source : Google

The 12 Founding clubs of ESL which I mentioned above were of the opinion that the format of the UEFA Champions League has to be changed because they have supporters all round the World and the Amount of money that other Governing bodies raise that they play in is because of their fanbase all around the world and so they wanted a larger piece of the pie which the UEFA never agreed to. So these 12 Teams proposed a Closed Breakaway Tournament called as the European Super League on 18th April 2021.

What is the Format of ESL?

The proposed competition was designed to feature twenty clubs who would partake in matches against each other  – fifteen of these would be permanent members, dubbed “founding clubs” who would govern the competition’s operation, while five other places would be given to clubs through a qualifying mechanism focused on the teams who performed best in their country’s most recent domestic season. These 5 teams only can get Relegated according to their performance in that year. But the other 15 teams are guaranteed participation with fixed Income and guaranteed spots in ESL irrespective of their Performance in that given year.

Source : Google

Each year, the competition would see the teams split into two groups of ten, playing home-and-away in a double round-robin format for a total of 18 group matches per team, with fixtures set to take place midweek to avoid disrupting the clubs’ involvement in their domestic leagues. At the end of these group matches, the top three of each group would then qualify for the quarter-finals, while the teams finishing fourth and fifth from each group will compete in two-legged play-offs to decide the last two quarter-finalists. The remainder of the competition would take place in a four-week span at the end of the season, with the quarter-finals and semi-finals featuring two-legged ties, while the final would be contested as a single fixture at a neutral venue. In total, each season of the competition would feature 197 matches (180 in the group stage and 17 in the knockout stage). So this means you will be able to watch matches like Liverpool-Barcelona, Real Madrid-Atletico Madrid, Juventus-Barcelona and also see Messi and Ronaldo lock horns every week, well this seems very Interesting isn’t it? But wait a minute it is not so cool for Football in general! Let’s see how!

Fans opposing ESL
Source : Google

Why ESL was so Controversial?

The major reason why fans all over the World are criticising and opposing this league is because there is no Relegation or Promotion for the 15 founding teams, that is, the 15 Founding Clubs will always remain safe irrespective of whether they win or lose every game. It’s kind of similar to the American Leagues like the NBA (National Basketball Association) or the NFL (National Football League) which is also called as the Franchise Based Leagues. Only the other 5 teams can get relegated and the other 15 Founding Teams will never ever be relegated! Football is becoming exclusive for some teams and so the Purpose, the Value of Winning goes for a toss because no matter what happens whether they win or lose they are guaranteed spots in the ESL. These clubs will be given 3.5 Billion Dollars just for participating in it, it is tough for owners to reject such a proposal but such a proposal goes against the absolute Value and Spirit of this amazing Sport. This League is basically making the Rich Richer and the Poor Poorer which is totally unfair to small teams.

Source : Google

These 15 Founding Clubs were Invited just on the basis of their rich history and culture and their fanbases. Can you Imagine underachiever teams like Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs and even Juventus for that matter who are currently struggling to even qualify for the Champions League are guaranteed Spots in the ESL just because of their rich fanbases. This Proposal was basically a Money-Driven Decision, and most Importantly the respective Club Managers and Players who are the major stakeholders of any team were not even consulted before taking this decision.

Manchester Derby

Also if this League would have continued then UEFA and FIFA the 2 governing bodies of World Football would have banned the teams from the Domestic Leagues like the Spanish La Liga, the English Premier League and Italian Seria A. Also the Players of the respective clubs would also be barred from representing their Countries! Can u imagine LaLiga without the El Classico(Real Madrid vs Barcelona) and Madrid Derby (Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid) ? Can u Imagine the Premier League without the Manchester Derby ( Manchester United vs Manchester City)? Can you imagine the Serie A without the Milan Derby (Inter Milan vs AC Milan)? And can u imagine the World Cup without Ronaldo, Messi, Hazard, De Bruyne and other big stars? I bet you can’t because these are the matches we Crave for! This league would mean that Domestic Leagues and also the UEFA Champions League would eventually loose their shine because no one would watch teams like Real Sociedad take on Athletic Bilbao or a Sporting Lisbon take on Galatasaray. This league could have been disastrous for Small teams and Football in general.

Milan Derby
Source : Google

Another Important Aspect of this league is that if it continued Small Teams would have lost their lustre and eventually fall apart. We know what happened when underdogs like Greece won the Euros in 2004 and when Leicester City won the Premier League in 2016, it inspired so many ! It is always heart-warming for all of us when Teams like Ajax and Porto qualify for the Quarter Finals of the Champions League by eliminating giants like Juventus and Real Madrid on the way! This is what Football is all about where underdogs beat the giants of European Football! All this things wouldn’t be possible if the ESL came into existence. Imagine this league started 20 years ago then Great Players like Ronaldo and Messi who started their career in Sporting Lisbon and Newells Old Boys respectively, might not have become so great. Because great players always start their career by playing for small teams and if small teams don’t exist these players won’t get the recognition they deserve! Yes I agree that we do like to watch big teams play each other, but watching them play every week would surely get tedious and eventually we will lose interest!

Approximately 80-85% of fans all around the World were not happy with this league, many managers and players of these clubs also opposed such a league and all these major stakeholders were not even taken into consideration by the owners which is truly flabbergasting! This proves that owners were just behind money and nothing else.

Reaction of Football Experts and How Fans saved the Day for Football

The domestic leagues and Uefa have condemned the actions and view it as a blatant power-grab. They have also pointed out clubs and players could be banned for participating.

Chelsea Fans Protesting against ESL

A joint statement by Uefa, the FA, the Premier League and their Spanish and Italian counterparts said: “We will remain united in our efforts to stop this cynical project, a project that is founded on the self-interest of a few clubs at a time when society needs solidarity more than ever.” In the UK, Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the plans “very damaging” and suggested they would “strike at the heart of the domestic game”, before housing minister Christopher Pincher told Sky News on Monday that “we don’t want to see a footballing league which is by the elite, for the elite, of the elite”. Manchester City Manager Pep Guardiola and Liverpool FC Manager Jurgen Klopp and many players like Liverpool player James Milner strongly condemned and criticized this new breakaway League! Pep Guardiola in an Interview expressed his disapproval by saying, ” It’s not a Sport if relation between Effort and Reward and Effort and Success does not exist. It’s not a Sport if it doesn’t matter if you win or lose. It’s not a sport if Success is already guaranteed”!

Source : Google

Just after the News broke out former Manchester United Players Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand and former Liverpool FC player Jamie Carragher strongly condemned and criticized their own clubs for this complicit decision. Their Podcast in SkySports had garnered millions of views overnight! Their Strong and Critical Interview Enthused millions of football fans to oppose such a bizarre league. The Proposal got widespread Criticism and Condemnation from not only Football fans but also from Governing Bodies of different Countries Europe. Fans from all over the World started berating their own club for their decision. Mobs started gathering outside the stadium in large numbers and did everything possible to be heard by their clubs.

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher Slams ESL

After all this opposition from their own fans many clubs started realizing their mistake and 8 out of the 12 Founding Clubs withdrew from the League. Chelsea and Manchester City were the first ones to withdraw from the league which was followed by teams like Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool FC, Inter and AC Milan also quickly followed the suit leaving a third Serie A club, Juventus, and Spanish trio Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and Barcelona as the last standing members of the breakaway group. This shows that fans have been victorious in their fight against the ESL

Rio Ferdinand lashes out on ESL

Immediate Fallout of ESL

The Immediate Fallout of this whole ESL Saga is that firstly Everyone Involved in the European Super League were forced to apologize. The English Premier League (PL) were the first ones to impose sanctions on these officials of ESL. PL stated that all Officials from these 12 Founding Clubs of ESL who are involved in Premier League Committees will have to resign or else they will be removed from their post. Premier Leagues have different committees like for example the Audit and Remuneration Committee has Chelsea FC Chairman Bruce Buck on Board, Club Strategic Advisory Committee which has Arsenal FC’s Office Bearers on Board. So all such officials have to resign from their posts or else they will be chucked off. UEFA and FIFA are yet to announce sanctions for the clubs but will sooner or later will penalize these founding clubs to ensure that this sorry episode won’t repeat itself!

Final Takeaway

Top Clubs of ESL were affected badly due to the Coronavirus Pandemic which forced them to take a decision on ESL to mitigate their losses. But the Pandemic has affected the smaller clubs more badly which the ESL clubs didn’t care for. At a time when being Empathetic and Selfless towards one another was the right option, these owners chose the wrong option of being Selfish and Greedy which could have murdered football. It was a total money driven decision which was followed by Widespread Criticism and Condemnation.

UK PM Boris Johnson on ESL

This whole episode shows that despite being in an Era of Corporate Control over Sports, we all fans emerged as Victorious. If football owners didn’t already know before the farce known as the ESL collapsed, no football club would exist without the fans that help build them into the clubs we know and love today. You can’t make life-altering decisions regarding ‘your’ clubs without consulting the fans and knowing you have the vast majority of their support. Trying to sneak your way into an ESL and hoping that the negative reaction will disappear over time is simply naive. It has been stated by a number of pundits on television and the internet that many of these foreign owners still have a lot to learn about the fans of these clubs. We don’t give up, we will stand up and we will be heard.

So that’s it from my side, Hope you all enjoyed reading my blog. Tribute to the Legendary Diego Maradona ⚽😍✨

Hello Friends, I am back with my new blog on Tribute to the Legendary Diego Maradona. Arguably considered as one of the greatest footballers of all time, Diego Armando Maradona sadly passed away on 25th November, 2020 due to Cardiac Arrest at the age of 60 which bought the whole footballing fraternity into a standstill. Tributes started pouring in for the Argentine legend from his fans all across the World. So in this blog I would be giving a small tribute to Maradona. I would be writing about his career, the awards he received, memorable moments and facts about Maradona and will then end my blog with some life lessons from Maradona. So let’s get started!

Club and National Career

Playing Style

Described as a “classic number 10” in the media, Maradona was a traditional playmaker who usually played in a free role, either as an attacking midfielder behind the forwards, or as a second striker in a front–two, although he was also deployed as an offensive–minded Central midfielder on many occasion. Maradona was renowned for his Dribbling ability, vision, close ball control, passing, and creativity, and is considered to have been one of the most skilful players and one of the greatest dribblers in the history of the game.

He was immensely talented and had a great passion and love for football. He once famously quoted in an interview, “When I die, I want to be born again and want to be a footballer. And I want to be Diego Armando Maradona again.” He used to dribble and beat defenders with ease when he was at his peak, opponent defenders were scared to mark him. He was a charismatic team leader, a guy who always resolved difficulties that may come up on the pitch.

Argentinos Juniors

On 20 October 1976, Maradona made his professional debut for Argentinos Juniors , 10 days before his 16th birthday vs Talleres De Cordoba. He entered to the pitch wearing the number 16 jersey, and became the youngest player in the history of the Argentine Primera Division. In his Debut match he nutmegged an opponent defender, Juan Domingo Cabrera, and receive an “ole” from the crowd, hailing the arrival of a special talent. After the debut match Maradona said that he felt he had the sky in his hands. The 5 feet 5 inch Argentine achieved the highest greatness in his overall professional career and led his club teams to championships in Argentina, Italy and Spain.

Maradona spent five years at Argentinos Juniors, from 1976 to 1981, scoring 115 goals in 167 appearances before his US$ 4 million transfer to Boca Juniors. Maradona with his poise, skill and talent became the best player for Argentinos as he scored 100 goals for the club merely at the age of 19. He left Argentinos in 1981 as he needed to move to a club more befitting his new stature.

Boca Juniors

Maradona was transferred to his boyhood club, Boca Juniors, for a fee of 4 Million US$, a club he always wanted to play for on 20th February 1981. He received offers to join other clubs, including River Plate, Boca Juniors’ Arch Rivals, who offered to make him the club’s best paid player but he declined all of them for Boca.  He made his debut two days later against Talleres De Cordoba, scoring twice in the club’s 4–1 win. On 10 April, Maradona played his first Superclassico against Arch Rivals River Plate at La Bombonera stadium. Boca defeated River 3–0 with Maradona scoring a goal after dribbling past Alberto Tarantini and Fillol. Despite the distrustful relationship between Maradona and Boca Juniors manager, Silvi Marzolini, Boca had a successful season, winning the League Title after securing a point against Racing Club. That would be the only title won by Maradona in the Argentine domestic league.

Maradona scored 28 goals in 40 matches for Boca Juniors after having a successful season with them. He in very quick time achieved the legendary status in Boca and became fan’s favorite just at the age of 20. He became an idol for many young kids all over the world due to his skill, talent and passion for football. There were reports that Boca Juniors took loan for the transfer of Maradona to Boca from Argentinos as at that time Boca were struggling with financial problems and couldn’t pay his huge fees. Maradona gave his best for both clubs which grew massively just due to his presence!!

Barcelona

Maradona at Barca

After the 1982 World Cup, in June, Maradona was transferred to one of the best teams of Spain Barcelona for a then World Record Fee of $7.6 million. Maradona was the team’s top scorer in the 1982-83 season for Barca and showed at times why he would later be considered, perhaps, the best of all time. His time at Barcelona would be marked by a bout of hepatitis, some successes, fights, a long injury, the “discovery” of cocaine, a near-riot, and a transfer to Napoli – an ultimately frustrating but sometimes brilliant two years.

In Barcelona, Spanish people nicknamed him ‘El Pibe De Oro’ which meant The Golden Boy, owing to his enormous Skill and Passion for Football. During his two injury-hit seasons at Barcelona, He had won a Copa del Rey, a Copa de la Liga and a Spanish Super Cup at and scored an impressive 38 goals in 58 matches for the blaugranes. After a controversial but successful 2 seasons at Barca, Maradona left Barca and joined Italian side Napoli in 1984 for another World Record fee of 10.4 Million Dollars. Disillusioned with life in Spain and at odds with the FC Barcelona board, Maradona saw a lucrative move to Italy as a way out of the impasse in which he found himself.

Napoli

Maradona at Napoli

History will show Napoli as one of Italian football’s most historic clubs yet there is a true turning point between life before Diego Maradona and life after his spell in Naples. The club was officially founded on August 1,1926 yet many in Italy consider the real birth of the club happened on the day Maradona was presented to supporters on July 5, 1984. Around 80,000 fans flocked to the Stadio San Paolo with tickets sold at three times their face value to see the arrival of their new hero. The club was financially in trouble, but Maradona still received 10.4 Million $ for it. The club took a loan from a bank to pay Maradona’s fee. By joining this weak club, Maradona had shown the world that he knows to take risks. Sports writer David Goldblatt commented, “Napoli Fans were convinced that the saviour had arrived.”A local newspaper stated that despite the lack of a “mayor, houses, schools, buses, employment and sanitation, none of this matters because we have Maradona”. Prior to Maradona’s arrival, Italian football was dominated by teams from the north and centre of the country, such as A.C. Milan, Juventus, Inter Milan, and Roma, and no team in the south of the Italian Peninsula had ever won a league title. Many Neapolitans have named their sons Diego, for he was able to redeem a city that was often the target of prejudices and discrimination.

The famous number 10 Jersey of Maradona which was retired by Napoli in Honour of him

Napoli was the most underdeveloped city of Italy at that time, and there used to be a terror of drug mafias. This club was not in a good condition and it was called ‘Back Benchers Club’ as it did not have any good players. But Maradona reversed both the game and luck of this club as soon as he arrived and quickly became Napoli fans’ favourite. At Napoli, Maradona reached the peak of his professional career and in his time there he elevated the team to the most successful era in its history. In his entire career with Napoli, he won 2 Seria A, 1 Coppa Italia, A Uefa Cup and a Supercoppa Italiana and scored 115 goals in 259 matches. Maradona changed the lives of Neapolitans so much so that they started worshipping him as a God. After his death, Napoli renamed their stadium from Stadio San Paolo to Stadio Diego Armando Maradona to honour the late club legend.

Napoli Fans pay Tribute to the Late Maradona!

After serving a 15-month ban for failing a drug test for cocaine, Maradona left Napoli in disgrace in 1992. Despite interest from Real Madrid and Marseille, he signed for Sevilla, where he stayed for one year. In 1993, he played for Newell’s Old Boys and in 1995 returned to Boca Juniors for a two-year stint.

Argentina (International Career)

Maradona in Argentina

Maradona made his full international debut at age 16, against Hungary, on 27 February 1977. Maradona was left off the Argentine squad for the 1978 World Cup on home soil by coach Cesar Luis Menotti who felt he was too young at age 17.

Maradona with the 1986 World Cup Trophy

He participated in 4 World Cups for Argentina in 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1994 and under his leadership Argentina won the 1986 World Cup. Argentina also won the FIFA World Youth Championship in 1979 and the Artemia Franchi Trophy in 1993 with Maradona. In his entire career with Argentina, Maradona scored 34 goals in 91 matches and achieved great success for Argentina. He was the star for Argentina in the 1986 World Cup scoring 5 goals in 7 matches and he also won the Golden Ball Award in that Tournament.

After his Retirement he even managed clubs like Argentinian clubs Argentinos Juniors, Racing Club, Textil Mandiyu, UAE Clubs like Fujairah and Al Wasl FC and Mexican Club Dorado. He also managed the Argentina National Team from 2008 to 2010.

Magical Moments of Maradona

The ‘Hand Of God’ Goal

Hand of God Goal vs England

This goal is one of the most controversial goals in Maradona’s career, isn’t it? Maradona’s performance against England in the 1986 World Cup has already gone down in history as his most iconic display for his country. For a match befitting the rivalry, the action on the pitch was tense and tetchy, and it needed something out of the ordinary to bring the contest to life. Unsurprisingly, it was Maradona who provided it. When a loose ball was hacked into the air by a panicking Steve Hodge, Maradona latched onto its flight path long before anyone else, including England goalkeeper Peter Shilton.

Hand of God Goal

With the ball dropping from a great height in the heart of England’s penalty area, Maradona leapt into the air and, just as Shilton appeared in range to punch clear, knocked the ball past the outrushing keeper and into the empty England net. There was a brief moment of hesitation from Maradona, who knew he’d used his hand to get the better of Shilton. But, in a moment of thinking every bit as quick as the handball itself, he glanced at the linesman, saw no adverse reaction from the official, and charged away in celebration. After the match, he referred to the goal being scored by “The Hand of God.” It broke the hearts of their big rivals and helped Argentina win the match 2-1, and it was a goal that has lived in infamy ever since.

The ‘Goal of The Century’

If Maradona’s first goal against England was one of the most controversial ever scored in a World Cup, then his second was almost certainly the greatest.

Goal of the Century vs England

With Argentina 1-0 up, and with England looking to open up in search of an equalizer, Maradona picked up a loose ball in the center circle, twisted and turned, and set off on the most legendary run ever seen during a World Cup match. Maradona outpaced the entire England midfield, then tore through England’s notoriously tough-tackling back line before swerving past Shilton and passing the ball into the empty net.

Genius Goal of the Decade

It was, quite simply, a moment of pure football genius, and showed just why Maradona was considered the greatest player in the world. It’s also something that no other Argentinian player, including Lionel Messi, has ever come close to replicating on the sport’s biggest stage.

His One-Man Show against Belgium

If his two-goal performance against England in the quarter-finals was iconic, his display in the semi-finals against Belgium was arguably even more complete. With his teammates misfiring in front of goal, despite being teed up by a string of Maradona passes, the little No. 10 took matters into his own hands and won the game by himself.

Maradona vs Belgium

A beautiful flick of his left boot put Argentina into the lead after he outsprinted two Belgian defenders, and goalkeeper Jean-Marie Pfaff, to Jorge Burruchaga’s through ball. Then, he netted another stunning solo effort when he picked up the ball 40 yards from goal, turned on the afterburners and sped past all four members of Belgium’s defense before firing unerringly into the far corner.

Maradona’s great goal vs Belgium in 1986 World Cup Semis

It was another example of Maradona taking a game by the scruff of its neck and winning it almost single-handedly, and it saw Argentina make it all the way to the World Cup final, where he would go on to set up the winning goal with a beautiful pass for Burruchaga.

His Iconic Warm-Up at Napoli

Maradona Iconic Warmup

One of the most memorable videos of Maradona features the Argentinian superstar during his pre-match warm-up ahead of a match for Serie A side Napoli in the late-1980s. While his teammates, including Brazilian superstars Careca and Alemao, warmed up diligently, Maradona instead danced and played with a football. And it was brilliant!!

Maradona’s Iconic Warm-up in Napoli

The sight of Maradona, bootlaces untied, dancing to 1980s hit “Live is Life” by Opus while juggling a football with ridiculous ease, showed the world the sheer mastery of a football Maradona possessed at his peak. The video, which has been posted and reposted online countless times, has been watched on YouTube more than five million times, and continues to captivate fans to this day.

Life Lessons from Diego Maradona

Inspite of Maradona’s controversial life affairs and his cocaine addiction, his enthusiasm towards sports was truly an inspiration for millions. He was a hero of many legends across the globe. He alleviated the standards of the game.

Here is his top 10 rules for glorified success in life:

LIVE LIFE BLACK & WHITE

He was a bold lad with no in between. His saying “I’m black or white, I’ll never be grey in my life,” should be the utmost life priority in this hypocritic world. Either you are good or you are bad, never be a dual face personality. He is been hailed as anti imperiliast, left wing socialist, who always supported progressive movements.

ONLY HARD WORK PAYS OFF

“When people succeed it’s because of hard work. Luck has nothing to do with success.” There is no myth formula to become successful, rather it is your hard work, sleepless nights and resistance that pays you off.

BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE THE BEST

“My mother thinks I am the best. And I was raised to always believe what my mother tells me” This envisaged self-belief gives you unbreakable confidence. People having a strong belief in you should be your priority, as their hope in you creates self belief and confidence in you.

BE PATRIOTIC

“I’d give my life to be the national team coach.” Because wherever you go, you only known by your origin. Stick to your soil, stick to your people. Always try to be their pride. Never forget your roots because ultimately it’s your roots who have made you. Always remember where you came for and why you wanted to follow your passion

Progress is Important, Rather than Win

“When you win, you don’t get carried away. But if you go step by step, with confidence, you can go far.” Always try to prefer progressive mind set, not necessarily only wining mind set, as this slow progression can lead you to the Pinnacle of your life!

Love and Follow your Passion

“To see the ball, to run after it, makes me the happiest man in the world.” Love what you passion for, what you dreamt for. You will find true happiness whenever you pursue your passion. That passion for achieving something big should bring a fire in you it should ignite you to achieve more. Never let your Hunger and Love for your Passion Die

Take Risk to Achieve your Targets

“You can say a lot of things about me, but you can never say I don’t take risks.” Maradona’s transfer from Barca to a struggling side Napoli was an evidence that he always loved to take risks. Take risks if you want to achieve big. Step out of your comfort zone and test your potentials.

Don’t Care about Negative People

“All the people that criticized me should eat their words.” Only take advice from sincerest people around and ignore bullies around you. As those negative opinions are only here to create hindrance. Keep head straight & move on!

Have a Big Heart and Mind

“I am Maradona, who makes goals, who makes mistakes. I can take it all, I have shoulders big enough to fight with everybody.” Have a big heart and mind, if you aim to achieve big. Because only people with strong shoulders can bear expectations pressure.

Always Aim for Eternity

“I’m alive and I want to keep living.” We can live for eternity by our acts, by our performances and by our impression. Therefore, try to leave your good acts & hence good name to remember. We get Eternity not only by our performances in our professional lives but also by the acts and treatment given to other people. One should always be a good human being and help each other!

Conclusion

2 legends Maradona and Pele

Diego Maradona touched the Pinnacle of Football world and also dived into darkness. His life went from Rags to Riches and then back to darkness. He was worshipped like a god owing to his supreme talent and love for football but his demons almost destroyed him. Rising to stardom from a grimy Buenos Aires slum to lead Argentina to World Cup victory, Maradona was a rags-to-riches story in his soccer-mad homeland and gained the iconic status of fellow Argentines Che Guevara and Evita Peron. Maradona was a player who, apart from scoring goals, also made mistakes. He once famously quoted, “I am Maradona, I make goals, I make Mistakes. I can take it all. I have shoulders big enough to fight with everybody!”

Maradona with former Indian Cricket Captain Sourav Ganguly during his trip to India

A magician with the ball – deceptively quick and a visionary passer – Maradona is considered by some as the greatest soccer player ever, edging out that other great, Brazil’s Pele. In Argentina, he was worshipped as ‘El Dios’ – The God – and in Spain he was regarded as ‘El Pibe De Oro’ which meant the ‘Golden Boy’. One of the most gifted soccer players in history, Maradona’s pinnacle of glory came when he captained Argentina to win the World Cup in 1986 before plunging to misery when he was kicked out the 1994 World Cup for doping.

Solar park Dubai

Dubai has become an international pioneer in developing the clean and renewable energy sector. It has developed a number of techniques and practices to enhance the efficiency of the energy sector while rationalizing consumption and finding alternative solutions to conventional energy. This supports the sustainable development of the Emirate.

The Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which was launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, aims to provide 7% of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy by 2020. This target will increase to 25% by 2030 and 75% by 2050. Dubai is the only city in the region to have launched such a promising strategy, with set goals and timelines that map the future of energy until 2050. To reach this ambitious target Dubai has several initiatives in place. One such notable initiative include the Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which is one of the largest single-site solar energy project in the world, with a planned total production capacity of 5,000 megawatts (MW) by 2030, and a total investment of AED 50 billion. If Dubai reach this Ambitious Target, they will be the City with the Lowest Carbon Footprint in the World by 2050. Such Initiatives inspire other Countries too to follow the suit!

3. UAE Costa Drone Drop

UAE Costa Drone Drop http://wikipedia

When you think about the kind of optimistic future promised to us by (some) science fiction writers, what could sound more fictional than a drone descending from the heavens to deliver you an iced coffee while you’re lounging on the beach?

That’s something Costa’s Jumeirah Beach Drive-Thru store Trialled in 2017 in the swanky Kite Beach area of Dubai, with its niftily-named Coffee-Copter. While there’s no guarantee that this becomes a permanent fixture of the beach scene, it speaks volumes about Dubai’s innovation that this was even trialled. Reportedly, this process took a mere 15 minutes, from the placing of an order to successful delivery. Here’s what that looked like, courtesy of Costa coffee!

5. Dubai Autonomous Flying Taxis

Dubai Flying Taxi http://wikipedia

Autonomous flying Taxis may seem like an image out of a science fiction movie, but the technology already physically exists: Dubai began testing electric taxi drones in September 2017. Similar to a two-seater helicopter, the Volocopter taxi is designed for 30-minute flights to and from ‘voloports,’ which are basically train stations for flying taxis. The Autonomous Air Taxi has a variety of unique features that include top security and safety standards, and multiple redundancies in all critical components such as propellers, motors, power source, electronics and flight controls. Although it’s not yet available commercially, the 18-rotor flying drone promises to be the eco-friendly, electrically-powered transportation solution of tomorrow — so long as you don’t want a flight longer than 30 minutes, that is!

The 70,000 odd Hindu Residents of Abu Dhabi will no longer have to travel out of the City to offer Prayers. Abu Dhabi’s first-ever temple BAPS Hindu Mandir is under construction and soon would be open for all. The site is located at Abu Mureikhah, which is near Al Rahba off the Dubai-Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed Highway. The mandir, upon completion, will be the first traditional Hindu stone mandir in the Middle East. In August 2015, the UAE government announced the decision to provide land for building a Hindu mandir in Abu Dhabi, during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first official visit to the country. In 2018, Modi laid the the Foundation Stone for the Temple.

Upcoming Hindu Temple may look like this

The mandir, inspired by Pramukh Swami Maharaj, who is the President of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha and blessed by Mahant Swami Maharaj, will be situated on 55,000 square meters of land. The temple is said to be a replica of the Akshardham temple in Delhi and another BAPS temple in New Jersey. Every corner and crevice made of pink stones from Rajasthan and marble from Macedonia are supposedly hand-carved by Indian artisans. These pieces of the temple were shipped to the UAE and assembled there. Goal Machine Cristiano Ronaldo

Hi friends! I am back with a bang on the journey of footballing legend Cristiano Ronaldo. If you really want to know the meaning of consistency, just check out the statistics of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, it is just unbelievable! In this blog, I will post about the incredible and motivating journey of Cristiano Ronaldo and will also give my opinion on the ‘Ronaldo vs Messi Debate.’ I am sure that his journey will not only melt your heart but also will inspire you to chase your dreams inspite of the obstacles that come in between! So let’s get started…..

Club and National Career

Sporting Lisbon

Cristiano Ronaldo Dos Santos Aveiro was born in Sao Pedro, Funchal , on the Portuguese island of Madeira. The name Ronaldo was added to Cristiano’s name in honour of his father José Dinis Aveiro’s favourite movie actor, Ronald Reagan, who was U.S. president at the time of Cristiano’s birth. As a child, Ronaldo played for amateur team Andorinha from 1992 to 1995, where his father was the kit man, and later spent two years with Nacional. Cristiano was always dedicated and passionate about football and aspired to become a professional footballer. During his childhood, he idolised Portuguese players like Luis Figo, Rui Costa and Fernando Couto and was amazed by their brilliance.

Childhood pic of Ronaldo

In 1997, Ronaldo aged 12, was signed by Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon for a fee of 1500 Pounds. At such a young age Ronaldo had to leave his home in Madeira and shift to Lisbon. Initially he had to go through a lot of trouble staying alone in a new place far away from his family. “Football gave me everything, but it also took me far away from home before I was really ready. When I was 11 years old, I moved from the island to the academy at Sporting Lisbon, and it was the most difficult time in my life.” revealed Ronaldo in an interview. His Family always supported him and encouraged him to stay there, because they knew that Ronaldo had the talent and the mentality to succeed. Ronaldo at age of 15 was diagnosed with a racing heart, a condition that could have forced him to give up playing football. But due to his determination and self-belief he managed to beat the disease after undergoing a heart surgery and returned to training a few days later. Nothing could stop Ronaldo from becoming world’s best footballer, not even a heart disease!!

Cristiano with Sporting Lisbon

On 7 October 2002, Ronaldo made his debut in the Primeira Liga (Portuguese League) against Moreirense, and scored two goals in their 3–0 win. Over the course, Ronaldo scored 5 goals and made 5 assists in 31 matches. He also won the Portuguese Super Cup with Sporting and was one of the most exciting young players. Owing to his Talent and Hardwork he got offers from many big teams like Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and FC Barcelona.

Manchester United

In August 2003, Manchester United signed teenage sensation Cristiano Ronaldo from Sporting Lisbon for a fee of 12.24 Million Pounds. He was the first ever Portuguese to play for his Dream Club Manchester United. Having been so much impressed by Ronaldo’s talent and hardwork, Manchester United players urged their manager Sir Alex Ferguson to sign him instantly. When Ronaldo was signed in 2003, his father Jose Dinis had a bet with him that he will become the world’s best striker which motivated Ronaldo even more. Ronaldo came from a background full of poverty. The transformation of Ronaldo from Poverty to being one of the richest sportsmen in the world is truly unbelievable!

Ronaldo with Manchester United

18 year old Ronaldo played alongside legends like Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes to name a few and instantly grabbed the attention of his fans. His dedication and passion for football was truly commendable and that was one of the reasons why he garnered so much attention. A key element in his development during his time in England proved to be his manager, Alex Ferguson, of whom he later said, “He’s been my father in sport, one of the most important and influential factors in my career.”

Ronaldo scored his first goal for Manchester United with a free-kick in a 3–0 win over Portsmouth on 1 November. Ronaldo most of the times played as a left winger for ManU, where he regularly looked to deliver crosses into the penalty area. In this position, he was able to use his pace and acceleration, agility, and technical skills to take on opponents in one-on-one situations.  Ronaldo became noted for his dribbling and flair, often displaying an array of tricks such as the Stepovers and so-called ‘chops’ that became his trademark. In later half of his ManU career, especially after the 2006 World Cup he transformed himself completely. “From being scrawny and skinny to transforming into a middleweight boxer, he underwent quite a transformation. He also became much better in terms of agility, leap, movements, etc after 2006 WC” revealed Ronaldo’s ManU teammate Gary Neville. Ronaldo ManU career was more of a learning curve for him, he was more of a dribbler in ManU. Ronaldo made 292 appearances for ManU scoring 118 goals and assisting 69 times. He has won many trophies for ManU like 2 Premier League trophies, 2 FA Cup Trophies, 1 Champions League title to name a few. He was one of the most admired ManU players and he also won the ‘Best FIFA Men’s Player of the Year’ Award twice and BALLON D’OR Award once in 2008.  His final ever goal for Manchester United came on 10 May 2009 with a free kick in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford

Real Madrid

Ahead of the 2009-10 LaLiga season, Ronaldo joined Real Madrid for a world record transfer fee at the time, of 80 million pounds. Ronaldo made his debut in La Liga on 29 August 2009, against Deportivo La Coruna and scored from the penalty spot in Madrid’s 3–2 home win. This was the phase of Ronaldo’s career where he got the ‘legendary’ status from his fans. Ronaldo could now play regularly against his arch rival Lionel Messi of Barcelona. Ronaldo in Madrid was slowly garnered the status of a complete player, because he could play with his left and right foot, was good in headers, scored some astonishing free-kicks, could also score from crazy angles and was the best in penalties too! The major reason behind Ronaldo’s success was Hardwork + Dedication towards football! “Nothing happens by chance. Talent is worthless if you don’t work hard” revealed Ronaldo when asked about his secret behind his success. Who can forget Ronaldo’s trademark celebration which  is something that every football fan have seen and tried, at least once!! Every time he scores, he runs off to jump, twirl, plant his feet with his hands by his side and with the scream “Siiii”.

Ronaldo doing the Siii Celebration with Real Madrid

The Ronaldo-Messi rivalry became more intense since Ronaldo’s arrival in Madrid. The El Classico(it is among the most viewed sporting events) which takes place between arch rivals Real Madrid and FC Barcelona also garnered more fans since 2009. Ronaldo and Messi both push each other and raise the bar of individual excellence. Ronaldo was most successful under the management of Zinedine Zidane where he won the Champions League three successive times. Ronaldo always praised Zidane and said that “You need to feel like you are an important part of the group and Zidane made me feel special” Ronaldo was very successful in Madrid by becoming the scoring the most number of goals for Madrid. Whenever his team needed him, Ronaldo was always there. He had an impressive career with Madrid that lasted almost a decade. He scored 450 goals in 438 appearances and made 131 assists for Madrid. He won the Champions League 4 times, La Liga 2 times, Spanish Cup 2 times, UEFA Super Cup three times and also the Spanish Super Cup 2 times with Real Madrid. Individually also he won several awards like the Best FIFA Men’s Player of the Year Award 4 times and also the BALLON D’OR Award 4 times with Madrid. During his time in Madrid, he became Real Madrid’s all time leading goalscorer and hence achieved the legendary status there! Cristiano Ronaldo is a part of Real Madrid’s legacy and will forever be remembered as one of the great icons throughout the club’s history.

Juventus

On 10 July 2018, Ronaldo signed a four-year contract with Italian giants Juventus after completing a 100 million pounds transfer which surprised the footballing fraternity, because no one expected him to leave Madrid including me. The transfer was the highest ever for a player over 30 years old, and the highest ever paid by an Italian club. Ronaldo always wanted to search for new challenges from the very beginning and that is the reason why he departed from Real Madrid. He literally won every single trophy with Madrid and I am sure, with his Passion and hunger to score goals and win trophies, he will be successful with Juventus too!

Ronaldo with Juventus

On 16 September, Ronaldo scored his first goals for Juventus in his fourth appearance for the club in a 2–1 home win over Sassuolo. In his two season career till now with Juve, Ronaldo has made 78 appearances scoring 54 goals and made 14 assists. With Juve, Ronaldo has already won 1 Italian Cup(Serie A) and 1 Italian Super Cup. He has already won “Player of the Year” Award once in the 2018-19 season, but is yet to win a Champions League with Juve. Cristiano is regarded as one of the most Decorated footballers of all time. Even at the age of 35 Ronaldo is the second leading goalscorer in 2019-20 Serie A season scoring 22 goals in 23 matches behind only Lazio’s Ciro Immobile. Age is just a number for Cristiano Ronaldo and that’s truly inspirational!

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Charity

Cristiano Ronaldo is considered selfish and arrogant by many of his haters but off the field he is totally the opposite. Ronaldo holds many ambassadorial roles for various charities and organisations. As one of the best-paid footballers in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo has done more than his fair share for charity. One of Ronaldo’s first donations came in 2011 when the Portuguese auctioned off his European Golden Boot for £1.2m, with the money going towards building schools in Gaza. In December that year, a shirt signed by the forward was sold for £31,000 with the money going to Save the Children Foundation and since 2012, the forward has been an ambassador for the charity, which aims to improve the lives of children all over the world. In 2015, Ronaldo was named as the most charitable sports star in the world by dosomething.org, which recognised his ambassadorship, his donations to charities, and varies other causes he has been involved with. On the Field Ronaldo has proven to be a thorough professional and a True Gentleman off it!!

Portugal (National Career)

At age 18, Ronaldo made his first senior appearance for Portugal in a 1–0 victory over Kazakhstan on 20 August 2003. He was subsequently called up for UEFA 2004, held in his home country, and scored his first international goal in a 2–1 group stage loss to eventual champions Greece. After converting his penalty in a shootout against England in the quarter-finals, he helped Portugal reach the final by scoring the opening goal in a 2–1 win over the Netherland. He was featured in the team of the tournament, having provided two assists in addition to his two goals.

Cristiano with Portugal against Spain

In his illustrious career for Portugal, Ronaldo has broken many records and is considered the best ever Portuguese Player. He is Portugal’s most capped player of all time by making 164 appearances and is also Portugal’s Leading Goalscorer by scoring 99 Goals. He is the youngest player to reach 100 caps for Portugal, he achieved this when he was 27 years, 8 months and 11 days. He is the only Portuguese Player to win UEFA Champions League 5 times. With Portugal, Ronaldo was crowned as European Champion once in 2016 and has also the won the UEFA Nations League in 2019. These 2 trophies was close to Ronaldo’s heart as he always wanted to win a trophy with his country. This was one of the reasons why experts consider Ronaldo to be better than his arch rival Messi because Messi has failed to win a single trophy with his country Argentina. Who can forget the Free Kick, the 33 year old Ronaldo scored against Spain in the 2018 World Cup. He scored that astonishing free kick in the dying moments of the game and managed to Tie the game for Portugal. He is Undoubtedly the greatest player to don the Portuguese jersey!

UEFA Cristiano League (UCL)

YES you guessed it right! I am talking about the UEFA Champions League(UCL). The UCL as you all know is the most toughest and prestigious football tournament in the world because it is contested by the Top-Division European Clubs that decide the competition winners. And Ronaldo is considered the ‘King of UCL‘ by all experts!

Ronaldo with one his UCL trophies for Real Madrid

Ronaldo has won this competition 5 times, most by any player, 4 with Spain’s Real Madrid and 1 with England’s Manchester United. He is the all time Top Goalscorer with 129 goals in 173 matches. He is only Player to score 17 goals in a single season which he scored for Real Madrid in 2013. He is the only player to score in 3 UCL FINALS. He is the only player to score in 11 straight UCL games . He is also the only player to score in all 6 games in UCL Group Stage. He has scored 129 goals in the UCL till now, 105 goals with Real Madrid, 15 with Manchester United and 8 with Juventus. Who can forget the Bicycle Kick Ronaldo scored for Real Madrid against Juventus in 2017-18 UCL quarter final tie! IT was Absolutely Breathtaking! Even Juventus fans stood and Applauded his Individual Brilliance! Another unforgettable UCL moment of Ronaldo came way back in 2009 when he played for Manchester! He scored a long range freekick from 40 yards out against rivals Arsenal in UCL SemiFinal at the Emirates. Noone believed that it would go in, Not even the commentators…. But Ronaldo believed in himself! I really think that UCL’s name should be changed to UEFA Cristiano League to honour Ronaldo for his brilliance!

Ronaldo’s 10 Rules for Success

These are the 10 rules that our Hero Ronaldo has advised people to follow if they want to succeed in life.

  1. Just Enjoy whatever you are doing because once you start enjoying you complete the task faster!
  2. Be Competitive. Because in today’s Cut-throat World, you have to be competitive to excel.
  3. Always Take on New Challenges.
  4. Know your Priorities Well
  5. People will Judge You. There will be criticisms too, but that should not stop you from following your dreams. If you are on the right track, you will excel.
  6. Work Hard. There are no shortcuts to success, you need to work hard and be dedicated to succeed.
  7. Believe you are the Best. Always believe in yourself. You can win, you can excel. Ronaldo always believed in himself, when noone believe in him and that’s why he is the best!
  8. Play for the Team.
  9. Enjoy the Moment. Becoming successful is a long process. You have to work hard and be consistent for years together. Take one step at a time, Focus and enjoy the Present and don’t worry about the future.
  10. Have a Sense of Humour.

My Opinion on the Ronaldo vs Messi Debate

Well honestly I feel both Ronaldo and Messi are the legends of the game. We should be feeling lucky to be born in an era where we can see both of these players play. There are only few players who are as Talented and Hardworking as they are. Their consistency as i said earlier is just unmatchable. Both Messi and Ronaldo push each other and raise the bar of excellence. Both are widely regarded not only as the two best players of their generation, but also, as two of the greatest of all time. But I feel both of them are different players, Messi on one hand is full of ‘God-Given Talent’ and on the other hand Ronaldo is full of Hard Work and Dedication, Ronaldo had to work hard for his Physique, for his Fitness and also for improving his Goal-scoring ability! I guess rather than comparing these two we should enjoy their beautiful game they possess. These two are undoubtedly the best of all time

Ronaldo and Messi

But if you ask me to choose one among them in my dream team, I would definitely choose Ronaldo. For me, he has reached that position not only due to his talent, but also due to his Hard-Work and Passion for Football. He believed in himself when no one believed in him. He transformed himself from a skinny boy to one of the most athletic person in the world. He had the determination in himself to be the best footballer in the World. For me and for all football fans around the world, he is an inspiration and a role model! His Commiment and Work Ethic is unparalleled. Even Indian Cricket Captain Virat Kohli is inspired by Ronaldo. The Run Machine is appreciating the Goal Machine!! And Undoubtedly Ronaldo is the greatest of all times and deserves all his accolades…..

Iconic and Inspirational Journey of Yuvraj Singh

Hii friends. Hope you all are safe and are taking good care of yourselves. So here I am with my first blog on the inspirational and iconic journey of Yuvraj Singh! I can’t think of a better player to start my blog, because he is a role model and an inspiration for all!  In this blog I will be sharing about Yuvi’s Cricketing Career and also about his courageous fight with cancer. I hope that in this tough times my blog will bring a smile on your face and give you courage to fight this Pandemic! So let’s get started….

Cricketing Career of Yuvi

It was 20 years ago when a young, charismatic and charming 18-year-old left world cricket surprised. Yuvraj made his breakthrough in the Indian squad for the 2000 ICC Knockout Trophy owing to his impressive performances for the Under-19 team. With a fearless approach, gorgeous bat-swing and immense hitting ability, Yuvraj was slowly capturing hearts of cricket fans.

A few people in Indian cricket were as blessed and talented as Yuvraj Singh was. With his unique high backlift and gift of strokeplay, he used to collect boundaries with amazing ease. Yuvi, as he is often called, always delivered whenever the captain needed him to. He also took many important wickets at crucial times for the team and so was considered an important asset for the Indian Cricket Team. Yuvi was always the one whom the captain can rely on be it with the bat or also with the ball. Yuvi always gave India the confidence to chase big totals or set up big targets. He was one of those rare players who did not get affected by the fact whether it was an off-spinner bowling, or a leg-spinner. He had the belief and the skill to do the job he needed to. He was also one of the athletic players in  the Indian Team, fielding primarily at point and covers with a good aim at the stumps. One of the main reasons Yuvi started playing cricket was his father Yograj Singh. Yograj Singh was a former Indian cricketer who played only 1 test and 6 ODI’s as a right arm fast medium bowler. He was considered to be one of the fastest Indian bowler at his time. “He’s always been like a dragon to me. He never appreciated me playing any other sport which always scarred me when I was a young kid. He always wanted me to play cricket and fulfil his dream of becoming a cricketer” revealed Yuvraj emotionally during his retirement speech.

He is one of the only 5 Indians to have played over 300 ODIs and therefore, was a regular member of the Indian side for over a decade. Also he is the only player to score over 300 runs and pick 15 wickets in the same tournament and achieved this feat in the 2011 World Cup. So, his handy bowling must not be underrated as it helped him bag 111 ODI wickets. He also won 2 Indian Premier League (IPL) Trophies, one with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 and the other with Mumbai Indians in 2019. When sledged and challenged, who can forget his six sixes against England’s Stuart Broad?!!

As every player has highs and lows, Yuvi had them too. The highs in his cricketing career was winning the 2002 Natwest Series against England in England, winning the 2007 Twenty 20 World Cup and also winning the 2011 World Cup. He won the Man of the Tournament award in the 2011 World Cup where he scored 362 runs and took 15 wickets.  His major low was the 2014 World T20 Final against Sri Lanka where he scored 11 runs off 22 balls and was blamed for India’s defeat. Yuvi was a big Manchester United fan. He loved seeing players like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Cristiano Ronaldo play for the Red Devils. Yuvi married Hazel Keech on 30th November 2016. Hazel  is a British−Mauritian film actress and model who has appeared in Indian television programs and films.

So much of India’s ODI success is credited to Yuvraj Singh and he deserves every bit of it. Yuvi was a man of high spirits and always had a mantra of “Never Give Up.” After an illustrious career that spanned almost 2 decades, Yuvi announced retirement on 10th June 2019. He is a legend and deserves all his accolades as he was a giant of the One-Day game.

Cancer Diagnosis and Comeback

Right after the 2011 World Cup Victory, Indian Cricketer Yuvraj Singh was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour in his left lung, which was confirmed to be Seminoma Lung Cancer. He proceeded to undergo chemotherapy treatment in Boston and Indianapolis, and was discharged in March 2012 after his third and final cycle of Chemotherapy. He returned to India in April 2012. Yuvi always considered his mother as his inspiration. Mumma’s Boy Yuvi always had his mother by his side throughout his Cancer Treatment in the US. He always had his mother’s back in his tough times.

Cancer, one of the most common disease in the world right now, was once considered as a deadly disease whose name shakes the person from head to toe, but Yuvi chose to battle it out.“When you hear the word cancer for the first time, you really get scared. Cancer. It’s like a death sentence. You become really unsure where your life will take you” said Yuvraj.  Yuvi realized fairly soon, that the only option ahead of him if he ever wanted to play cricket again, was to receive effective cancer treatment. He got started on multiple rounds of chemotherapy and flew to Boston and Indianapolis in 2012, to meet the doctors who had previously treated former cyclist Lance Armstrong.

“The side effects of chemo made me reel on my knees some days. But I was determined to come back and play for my country. That’s the one thing which always motivated me” said Yuvi in one of his interviews. Yes, our hero was inspired by Lance Armstrong who has made many  records in his career as well and was also diagnosed with the same kind of tumour in 1996. He was treated with tumour and despite that, he began his career again. Yuvraj has also been treated by the same doctor. During his time in the U.S, he used to read the autobiography of Lance Armstrong for motivation and to get his treatment done perfectly.

We need to remember Yuvraj’s biggest takeaway, “When it comes to cancer, the only choice we have is to get up.” Finally after 3 intensive chemotherapy sessions from February 2012 to March 2012, Yuvi triumphed Cancer and returned to India in April 2012 eager to get back into his grooves i.e playing cricket for India again! Yuvi made a comeback for India on September 2012 in a 20-20 match against New Zealand. He even scored his career best One Day score of 150 runs against England in Cuttack in January 2017.

Yuvi after his Cancer comeback started his own charity, YouWeCan (YWC) and has treated over hundreds of cancer patients.  In April 2015, he announced the intention to invest INR 40–50 crores in online startups, expanding the YouWeCan proposition by setting up YouWeCan Ventures in order to do so. In 2015, YouWeCan also initiated the nationwide cancer awareness in association with Jayakrishnan, the founder of Heyyo Media. The campaign took cancer awareness to many students across the country. The main Motto of YWC is “ Live, Dare, Inspire.”

YWC is built around the ethos – Live, Dare and Inspire – and aims to motivate individuals to fight against insurmountable odds, have courage and make fighters out of all of us” said Yuvi in an Interview.

The charity also launched a sports lifestyle brand that offers premium apparel of the finest quality. “YWC is an athleisure wear brand offering premium apparel of the finest quality exuding the personality of our founder – Yuvraj Singh. The idea behind YWC is to link it back to the YouWeCan Foundation for cancer awareness and prevention. The idea was to make the foundations work financial independent and self sustaining. Hence YWC-clothing brand supports the foundation actively with sales revenue going directly to the foundation. The other aspect of the business model right from the launch was to make it a viable fashion retail brand ” said Shazmeen Kara who is the Founder & CEO and overall brand head for YWC  (an initiative by Yuvraj Singh).

The book “The Test of My Life: From Cricket to Cancer and Back” is an autobiography of Yuvraj Singh which was released on 19th March 2013. The book has the history of Yuvi’s life. Yuvi described the Ups and Downs he faced in his career and how he comes out of stronger from his toughest days! Do read this book for getting more inspiration. I personally got tears in my eyes while reading, it will surely inspire you too!
